Unless you've fallen asleep under a rock somewhere (who falls asleep under rocks???) you'll be aware that the western state of Australia (imaginatively named "Western Australia" by our dull but dutifully administrative forefathers) is currently experiencing a resource driven economic boom.
This is of course being led by the ever expanding economies of China and India and their insatiable appetite for raw minerals.
What does this have to do with The Guzzle? Well... bugger all really, other than a rather pretty little segue into the world of Western Australian wine.
Here at The Guzzle one thing has become increasingly apparent over the last 12 months or so - and it's not that most Aussie Pinot is crap (that's an established fact).
What has become apparent is that the wine producing regions of WA have consistently been producing a disproportionate number of the better wines to come out of Australia in recent years.
The Cabernet blends are generally elegant, beautifully balanced and superbly made; the Chardonnays are full of fruit complexity and character (with an ever improving structure); and the Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blends are, with reasonably rare exception, fresh, lively and interesting.
In our view, the consistency of quality across a broad number of sub-regions and an increasing spectrum of varieties makes WA the best over all region to buy wine from in Australia at the moment.
Agree? Disagree? Let us know...

I thought you were going all Pet Shop Boys on me.

But I have to agree. I'm finding that more and more of my cellar is WA Cab blends, chards and rieslings.
